woodland abstracts

In the words of one of my all-time favourite photographers:

To me, photography is an art of observation. It's about finding something interesting in an ordinary place - I've found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.
- Elliott Erwitt 1928

It clouded over this afternoon while we were walking in Friston Forest, which meant the light wasn’t great, and ‘regular’ photos were coming out a little blurry, so I decided to play with my camera and shoot some long exposure shots of the woods with intentional movement blur.

There are some wonderful abstract photographers out there that I have come across reading on landscape (a rather wonderful landscape photography magazine by the multi-talented Tim Parkin) such as Peter Scammell, Valda Bailey and Chris Friel, and I thought I’d have a go myself.

After much experimentation and lots of attempts, here are 11 shots that I quite liked. I think with a lot more practice I could end up with some pretty fun results.

All shots taken handheld, with lateral or rotational movement slowly while pressing the shutter. To try this, set a slow shutter speed, then move the camera about 10-20cm in a given direction. Try varying your speeds to achieve different effects.

Taken using manual settings at around f11 at 1/10th of a second using a 56mm lens, using my Fuji XT1.
